Community Kayak Instructor 1  - Pool

This program is designed for lifeguards and swimming instructors who work at pool and wish to teach kayaking, or instructors or youth leaders wishing to teach kayaking for their groups and clubs that are running winter pool sessions. This is an 8 hour program designed to get all hands on deck so to speak and is designed to be used in pool settings only under a controlled environment.

This session runs year round based on pool availability and is targeted at the pool community to enable them to incorporate kayaking into their pool programs. The program involves two hours of dryland theory an six hours practical application followed by a two hour teaching application.

In this program the students should be confident in water and confident teaching,
Here the instructors by the end of the course should feel confident with instructing in the general knowledge of kayaks and their gear, safety in the water, basic boating techniques ( forward stroke, draw stroke, forward sweep, reverse sweep, stopping, low brace and high brace, hip flicks and hand of god recovery) and enthusiasm of teaching and organizing a paddling class.
All of the flatwater programs both indoor and out are based on a maximum of 8 - 1 student to teacher ratio not including the teacher.

The experience will teach you a variety of advanced skills in a safe and fun approach while helping build confidence and selfesteem. From here you will have the chance to advanace your training with our contiuned education programs and establish more confidence on the water. The certified instructors at Highlevel Canoes and Kayaks are trained in instruction paddlers of all ages and will lead you through age related skills and drills with lots of thrills. At the same time we strive to instill upon all participants the importance of safe paddling in all water related activitiies. ( and a reminder you will be getting wet)

All students will be graded as either trained or certified based on skill levels and perfromance at the end of the course. Fees do not include pool rental.

Prerequisite:

age 16+
good swimming skills required
must have previously experienced the basic skills involved

Requirements:

change of clothes and towel
lunch with a couple bottles of water
swimwear
preregistration and waiver
medical provisions that maybe pertinent for the staff
(all information is kept confidential)
completion of student log 8 hours

risk management
basic pool safety
pool and paddling equipment
boat designs and purpose
boat fit
getting in and out of boats - dryland and wet exits
basic strokes-forward reverse sweeps, draws , hip flicks, high and low brace and hand of god
practice routines
games
professionalism, ethics and promotion

all paddling gear
all water related clothing
pfd and all safety gear
