Part C - Rope Work and Mechanical Advantages
Ages 16+
This is a three day of three part program designed to cover overall swift wate rrescue situations. This portion of the course will offer an introduction into a greater understanding of moving water and dealing with emergency situations focussing on casualty and equipment recovery, utilizing rope work and mechanical advantages while assuming a leadership role. WE will cover theoretical knowledge and practical experience indeveloping your river confidence, dealing with emergency situations allw hile developing your communication skills, technical skills, decision making skills, interpersonal relationship skills, teamwork skills, and leadership skills. Sudents will also obtain a greater understanding of moving water and developing your river reading ability, improving your river safety and accident prevention. Most importantly each person will get a hands on experience at practising swift water rescue including self rescue and assisiting others, promoting the decision making process enabling you to evaluate swift water emergency situations you may find yourself in all while minimizing the risk on the water.
To begin your experience with part three of a three part course wew ill be meeting at 1211 - 2 ave south Friday night from 8:00-9:00pm where we will be covering the theory elements of the course and discussing proper gear nd safety in dealing with ropes and mechanical advantage systems for the upcoming event. Day two we will be meeeting at Highlevel at 8:00am and heading up to the Crowsnest River. tHis day will consist of many factors starting with understanding the river. We will also be focussing on a leadership role while becoming comfortable with your environment. We will also be going over river hydrology and morphology and how this changes the boat reactions. River safety will be a priority in this course and extensively covered, beginning with various river hazzards, swimming in current, two person and self rescues, hypothermia, trip planning, river classification, signals and whistles and good boat control. After completing our run we will return to Highlevel approximately 6:00m. Day three we will be meeting at Highlevel at 8:00am and travel to the Crowsnest River were the work will begin. This day will consist of all participant taking a very hands on approach to every application of dealing with paddlers and their gear needing various forms of assistance. We will also make sure you understand that you should only paddle at or below your skill level to ensure safe and happy river experiences.
This experience will teach you a variety of advanced skills in a safe approach while helping build confidence and self esteem. From here you will have the chance to advance your training with our continued education programs and establish more confidence on the water. The certified instructors at Highlevel Canoes and Kayaks are trained in instructing paddlers of all ages and will lead you through age related skills and rills with lots of thrills. At the same time we strive to instill upon all participants the importance of safe paddling in all water related activities.
